Everything You Need To Know About Web Design

3Having a website is not an option these days. If you are in business, it’s a requirement.

Whether it’s on a desktop, laptop or mobile device, your website is the best way to differentiate yourself from the competition.

The Age of Google

These days, “Googling” is the way to find everything- including your business.  This is why you need an up-to-date, robust website to tell your story.  And — your website has to be found before it can sell your services to your customers.  For people to find your website, you have to rank high in the search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, and the like).  For people to stay on your website long enough to be persuaded to hire you, the website content has to feed their hunger.

Think of your own search patterns -do you put a search term in and then click on a few results? Do you judge each website instantly and move along quickly if you don’t see the information you asked the search engine for? Do you stay if the website looks old and dated or do you move on to the next one? Don’t kid yourself – we all judge a business by its website.

The average time a potential client gives your website is ten seconds.

In these ten seconds, the decision is made to look deeper into what the website offers or to move on to the next search result.

The creation and marketing of websites has crowded the search results as everyone wants to be found for everything. Having a mobile friendly site has become mandatory or you won’t even be given in a mobile search.  Get your current website reviewed and see how you can do better.

Everyone wants to be on the first page of Google.  In fact, I hear that request several times a week.  The reality is that it takes work and it takes time to get to the first page. Understanding that fact is the first step to getting there.  It is possible.  Let us be your partner on that journey.

What Separates You From Your Competition?

If you have a business, it’s easy to think people want to learn more “about you” but the truth is they don’t – not until they know you have a service or product they are interested in. It is important to understand that the objective of your website is to define yourself as an expert.

As an internet user, do you want to land on a website and just read marketing jargon, or do you want to understand what separates this company from the rest?  You achieve this by giving answers and providing real proof – not by simply having an FAQ page. Use your website to teach people about your services.

Treat your website like a 24 hour, 365 salesperson. If you were in front of a prospect, what would you tell them? Typically, you would tell them who you are and what you do. What makes you different and unique about your business practice? Simply put, what makes you, “you”? Share that information on your website. Think of the questions prospects ask you every day and write about it.

Your website should not be a resume either – a resume looks at what you have done but your website should show the prospect what you “can” do.

When we develop your website with you, we do extensive research  what your competition is doing and we use that information to make your website stand out.

The biggest mistake we see is websites that take a prospective client down an unnatural path that does not have any “calls to action” and does not clearly show in the menu the services you offer. Remember the ten second rule, if they don’t see it in the menu – they leave. Why bury your services? The data shows people read from the left. This true on a website menu as well. So often we see the “Home” button first, followed by “About Us,” “Services,” and “Contact Us.”  Why do website design companies let you put your home button on the left? You are sending the reader back to the beginning and not deeper into your funnel of services. A properly formatted menu will keep people on your website.

Wordpress as a Content Management Tool

While we do make websites in other platforms, we are a WordPress house because it is a scalable CMS (content management system). One of the unique features of a WordPress website is that all your content is stored in a database, not on a hardcoded page, while the “look and feel” are kept separately in another database. What does this mean to you? It means that if you decide to change the “look and feel” of your website again, it is a much simpler process. You will never have to do a major redesign ever again. With a simple change to the theme or design, you get a brand new website.

We build all of our websites with a framework that is trusted and updated as WordPress make changes. We can work with our designers to give you that unique look for your company that works with your branding and specific needs. Our framework allows us to: create many custom sidebars; add social media feeds or follows; get people to sign up for your mailing list; make a phone call, or find your location on a mobile device. Build in the features you want now and plan for the scalable future.

Also, with a website built in WordPress, it is a simple matter to train you or your employees to change and add  content to your site.  No special computer programs or skills are required beyond basic word processing skills.  You save time, money, and frustration when you can control your website content in house.  And, if you get stuck, call us and we’ll help you out.

What is a framework?

A framework is like a theme that is vanilla, with no “look and feel” but unlimited options. We can control everything and create our own custom design without getting road blocked by the limitations of a theme built by someone that suddenly stops supporting it.

Keys to the Car If you have had a website that you couldn’t make changes to and you had to rely on a website design company for every little change including the costs involved- our website solution gives you the keys to the “car” (website).

If you are just a little tech savvy, we can train you and your team to make any changes you need.

If you are more the “leave it to the experts” kind of business, we have maintenance packages to suit your every need. Do you want monthly analytics on how your site is performing? We can do that. Do you want someone to do your WordPress and security updates? We can do that too. By Buy monthly support and leave the work to us.

SEO on a Website

There are so many factors to getting found and we have seen every mistake. Organic SEO or search engine optimization is the foundation to getting found. Would you build a house without a solid foundation? Building a website today requires that same foundation. We are not surprised when SEO companies have come along to “help” customers, but what they do is help only as long as you pay. But so often they do not review your website for the organic things you should do first, so when you stop paying, your rankings drop, period!

Here’s an example: if you sell carpet in Boulder, you might name your page carpet.html, where as we would suggest you call your page something like carpet-boulder.html. That page name mentions the keyword “carpet” and the location that someone would search for. Think of how you search. Would you just put “carpet” in as a search term? Probably not. That would deliver results numbering in the millions. But if you added another term, like where you are looking for that service, the results would easily be cut in half. There are dozens of organic footprint items that need to be done to every important webpage. We have the expertise to build you a solid foundation.
